Where to begin decorating for Christmas?
The breakfast room in the sunspace Christmas decor began with a set of new fabric placemats and matching napkins for a Christmas table setting . . . which inspired decorating a birdcage with coordinating colors and berries.
A cheery red plaid ribbon brightens the breakfast area and dispels any gloom from overcast wintry skies. The shades of red in the ribbon coordinate with the navy stripes in the ribbon and with the new placemats and napkins on the nearby table.
Later this week you will see the breakfast table setting with its new finery that inspired the birdcage decor.
A topiary ivy plant and fresh-cut Christmas trees outside on the porch add more Christmas to the breakfast area inside.
A mix of faux berries, fresh tree clippings, preserved moss, and tiny pine cones shows you can use all manner of greenery and natural materials together for a beautiful arrangement.
Artificial frosted cranberry red berries were the beginning of dressing up the birdcage for the season. The new placemats and napkins have grapevine wreaths with the same shade of red berries on the wreaths.
Next came the fresh green sprigs clipped from the base of one of the fresh Christmas trees on the porch.
TIP: Buy a second-quality small fresh tree to cut apart for fresh greenery all over the house and all during the holiday season. Keep the tree in a small bucket of water outside, and clip branches as needed.
A cluster of tiny foraged pine cones at the top of the birdcage hides the ends of the tree clippings. A quick spray of gold paint gives the pine cones a dressy look for decorating.
TIP: When traveling to other parts of the country, collect natural seeds, cones, etc... that have dropped from trees and bushes in public areas. Then you will have a diverse collection of items to use with your area's natural items at Christmas.
The final touch to the top of the cage is the cranberry red plaid ribbon tied around all of the stems and to the top of the birdcage.
A couple of fresh tree clippings across the back of the cage act as a home for leaky hummingbird water faucet.
Too beautiful to add to the landfill, the old water faucet lives in and around the potting bench on the back porch. The old hummingbird is handy as a weight to secure paper as well as being a little decor in the birdcage.
Preserved moss and more tree clippings make a beautiful nest for a faux bird's egg.
When the fresh greenery in the Christmas red plaid berry birdcage dries out, a quick step to the back porch will provide new sprigs all during the season.
