and a new exterior light fixture
The garden shed, known affectionately as the Jardin Château by my family, needed some fresh paint after braving the first six winters of its new life.
The beautiful little Jardin Château is home to my French Country Christmas Event each December, and you have seen lots of pretty pictures of it decked out in its finest.
Today you are getting to see real life and how to deal with it so the little shed will continue to be beautiful for many more years.
The French doors were looking a little shabby due to their paint exposed to the elements.
Plus, the fascia board above the front French doors was suffering from moisture damage and beginning to look a little moldy.

Shabby chic may be beautiful in its own way, but chipping paint on exterior doors leaves the doors open to serious damage.
It was time for some fresh exterior paint before the wood started rotting and was damaged beyond repair.
The first step was to sand both the door frames and the fascia boards. It was important to get all of the moldy spots removed before fresh paint could be applied.
Fresh exterior blue paint sealed the fascia board and doors to keep moisture from soaking into the wood. Two coats of paint are better than one to make sure the surfaces are completely sealed and the color is vibrant.
A second important step in protecting the fascia board from future water damage was installing metal flashing around the entire roof line.
There was a small piece of flashing before, but a better flashing designed specifically to protect fascia boards from rain running off roofs was installed. The flashing is inexpensive and well worth the few dollars it cost. Local home improvement stores keep it in stock.

There is a lamp post in the yard near the garden shed to provide lighting along the walkway from the shed to the house.
Sometime this winter the lamp no longer worked even after replacing the light bulbs.
A master electrician did the electrical work in my master bathroom small vanity area update. While he was at the house, I had him check out the exterior lamp on the post and the wiring between the garden shed and the lamp post.
Water damage was the culprit again. The base of the glass globe had rusted through and water shorted out the lamp. Plus there was a problem in the wiring between the shed and lamp.
I could not find the same light fixture to replace the old damaged green one, but did find a similar black one from Home Depot and ordered it online.
While we did the garden shed paint refresh and metal flashing installation ourselves, we leave electrical work up to the pros to make sure everything is safe and meets required codes.
The fixture is a little cattywampus which will be corrected.
Fresh paint, new flashing, and a new exterior lamp were not major repairs, but sure make a difference in how everything looks.
The garden shed feels like a Jardin Château once again.
